If it says “No SIM restrictions,” your iPhone is unlocked. Next, dial *#06#. If an EID number appears, your iPhone supports eSIM. You need both before a travel eSIM will work.

Most guides on how to check if an iPhone is unlocked are written for people switching carriers at home. This one is for travelers. Your flight is booked, and you want data the moment you land. Two quick checks tell you whether that will happen.

I run BazTel, a travel eSIM provider. A carrier lock is one of the most common reasons an eSIM won’t install for our customers. It’s almost never the eSIM’s fault. It’s also fixable, as long as you find out before you fly.

        Table of Contents

Check 1: Does your iPhone support eSIM?

Open the Phone app and dial *#06#. It takes ten seconds and rules out the biggest cause.

Already unlocked but still stuck? Carrier locks aren’t the only blocker. Our guide to the four other locks that can block an eSIM walks through each one.

Locked? How long an unlock takes in 2026

Unlock rules shifted this year, mostly in the US. If your phone is locked, these rules decide whether you can fix it before you fly.

The big change came from Verizon. In January 2026, the FCC waived a 60-day unlock rule Verizon had followed since 2008. Verizon now unlocks postpaid phones only once they’re fully paid off. Its prepaid phones need 365 days of paid, active service. So do phones from Verizon-owned brands like Visible, Total Wireless and Tracfone.

Carrier

Postpaid phones

Prepaid phones

Verizon

Unlocks once fully paid off. Always confirm with your own carrier.

My rule of thumb is to check at least two weeks before departure. Apple notes that carriers can take a few days to process an unlock. Payoffs and waiting periods can stretch that further.

A note from my finance background. If you’re still paying off a carrier iPhone, compare the remaining balance with your likely roaming costs. For long or frequent trips, paying it off early can work out cheaper. Run the numbers for your own situation.

Found out you’re locked after landing?

It happens more often than you’d think. Here’s what I’d do, in order.

Contact your carrier over Wi-Fi. Use their app or live chat. Many unlocks are applied remotely, so you don’t need a store.

Restart and recheck Carrier Lock. Once it shows “No SIM restrictions,” install your travel eSIM.

Bridge the gap. Lean on hotel Wi-Fi and offline maps. Use home roaming sparingly, and check the daily rate first.

Be careful with “erase and restore.” Apple’s fallback fix involves backing up and erasing your iPhone. Only do that on reliable Wi-Fi, with a fresh backup.

Skip third-party “IMEI unlock” websites. The lock belongs to your carrier, and only they can remove it.

Unlocked gets you connected. The network keeps you connected.

Here’s something most unlock guides never mention. An unlocked iPhone is your entry ticket. It doesn’t guarantee good signal. The network behind your eSIM decides that.

We saw this firsthand last weekend. Singapore hosted the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Marina Bay from 9 to 11 October 2026. It was the circuit’s first Sprint weekend, so race-day crowds arrived a day early. More than 250,000 people attend across the weekend. They all share downtown Singapore’s mobile capacity with its offices, hotels and malls.

Some of our customers at the circuit had poor reception. Travelers using other eSIM providers posted about the same problem on Facebook. Their phones weren’t the issue. Everyone was unlocked and eSIM-ready. The bottleneck was the network partner behind the eSIM.

Once we spotted the pattern, we didn’t wait for the weekend to end. We moved affected customers to a stronger network partner and re-issued fresh eSIMs.

BazTel is a small team, and that helped. Customer messages reach the people who can make decisions. There’s no ticket queue between a complaint and a fix. Larger providers have bigger systems, and bigger systems move slower. By the time a pattern shows up in their reports, the race is often over.

Here’s how that ties back to this guide. The fix only worked because those phones were unlocked. A replacement eSIM is just another profile to install. A locked iPhone would have rejected it, just as it rejects the first one. Unlocking isn’t only about getting online. It keeps your options open when something goes wrong mid-trip.

Heading to a big event? Install your eSIM at home, save tickets and maps offline, and pick a provider that answers quickly. If Singapore is next, here’s our Singapore eSIM.

Your 2-minute pre-trip checklist

Dial *#06# and look for an EID number.

Open Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock.
