This guide explains what “Roam Like Home” actually covers, who it leaves out, and when a local SIM or eSIM is genuinely worth buying.

I’m Peter, founder of BazTel. I’ve travelled through a dozen European countries on an Australian SIM, so I’ve lived the gap between what EU roaming rules promise and what actually applies to a visitor from outside the EU.

        Table of Contents

What “Roam Like Home” Actually Means

Roam Like at Home (RLAH) is an EU regulation, not a universal travel benefit. It applies to people with a mobile contract from an operator based in the EU or EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway). Since 1 January 2026, it also extends to Ukraine and Moldova.

If you qualify, you use your phone in other RLAH countries at the same price as at home, for calls, texts, and data. There’s a catch on data: if your home plan is unlimited or very cheap per gigabyte, your operator can apply a fair-use cap, calculated from your plan’s price. Most travellers on a mid-tier plan get a guaranteed minimum in the range of 20–40GB of roaming data before any surcharge applies.

Two exceptions catch people out constantly. The UK left the RLAH zone after Brexit, and Switzerland was never in the EU, so neither is covered by the free-roaming rule, regardless of whose SIM you’re using.

The Catch: It Doesn’t Cover Australian Travellers

Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are Australian operators, not EU or EEA operators. That means Roam Like Home simply doesn’t apply to you, no matter how long you’ve had your Australian plan or how much you pay for it each month.

In practice, this means an Australian traveller in the EU is in exactly the same position as an Australian traveller anywhere else: paying home-carrier roaming rates, unless they buy a local SIM or a travel eSIM. We covered what that actually costs on Telstra’s network in our zone-by-zone Telstra roaming breakdown, and the same logic applies across every EU country, since they’re mostly Zone 2 destinations.

EU/EEA resident with EU mobile plan

Australian traveller (Telstra/Optus/Vodafone)

Covered by Roam Like Home?

Yes, across the EU/EEA (+ Ukraine, Moldova from 2026)

No — your carrier isn’t an EU/EEA operator

What you pay in the EU

Same as your home plan, subject to a fair-use data cap

Your home carrier’s international roaming rate, or a local SIM/eSIM

Covers UK or Switzerland?

No — both sit outside the RLAH zone

N/A — same roaming or eSIM logic applies everywhere non-domestic

So Do You Actually Need an eSIM in the EU?

If you’re an EU or EEA resident travelling within the EU on your home mobile plan, the honest answer is often no. Roam Like Home already gives you calls, texts, and a reasonable data allowance at your normal price, and buying an eSIM on top of that is usually unnecessary, unless your fair-use cap is genuinely too small for how you use data, or your trip includes the UK or Switzerland.

If you’re travelling from Australia, or any other non-EU/EEA country, the answer is yes. Your home carrier’s roaming rates apply, and they’re rarely competitive against a dedicated travel eSIM or a local SIM bought on arrival.

Local SIM vs eSIM for Non-EU Travellers

Local SIM (bought on arrival)

Travel eSIM (bought before you fly)

When it’s active

Only after you land, find a store, and register

Can activate before departure or on landing

ID requirements

Often needs passport registration in-store

Usually none for data-only plans

Multi-country trips

New SIM needed at each border in most cases

One eSIM plan can cover 30+ European countries

Your original number

Occupies the SIM slot, so you lose access unless dual-SIM

Runs alongside your home SIM on eSIM-compatible phones

Typical cost

€10–€25 per country, plus time spent finding a store

From $6.99 for 1GB/7 days, scaling with data and duration

A local SIM bought in the right country can be excellent value. One Whirlpool Forums user noted that buying an Orange SIM in France meant it roamed free across the rest of the EU for the remainder of the trip, since it’s a genuine EU-based SIM benefiting from Roam Like Home once purchased.

The trade-off is timing and consistency. You need to land, find a working store, sometimes register with a passport, and repeat the process if your route includes a country outside that SIM’s coverage. An eSIM removes that friction: it’s set up before you fly, and a single regional eSIM can cover dozens of European countries on one profile.

Real Trip Cost Example: 14 Days Across Three Countries

Take a two-week trip through Italy, France, and Germany. Buying a local SIM in each country, at roughly €10–€25 each, plus the time spent finding a store and re-registering at each border, adds up to somewhere around $60–$90 AUD in SIM costs alone, before counting the hours lost.

A single BazTel Europe eSIM, covering the same three countries on one profile, starts from AU$1.50 for 1GB over 7 days and scales up to AU$174 for 100GB over 180 days, so a mid-size data plan for a two-week trip sits comfortably inside that range, with no store visits and no second SIM to manage.

What Travelers Say in Unfiltered Community Forums

Whirlpool Forums — Australia’s largest independent tech and telco community — has years of genuine, unpaid discussion from Australians actually navigating this exact decision before European trips.

One traveller recalled a pre-2017 Europe trip where they came home with eight separate SIM cards from crossing borders — a reminder of how much friction Roam Like Home removed for EU residents, and how that friction still exists for visitors buying local SIMs country by country.

Another user bought four regional travel SIMs for a European trip and reported the performance was quite poor in some of the countries visited, a useful reminder that not every multi-country SIM or eSIM performs evenly across every network.

A separate thread confirms the UK/Switzerland gap directly: one traveller’s Italian tourist SIM explicitly excluded the UK and Switzerland from its EU-inclusive data allowance, matching the official RLAH rules.

These are ordinary travellers comparing notes with nothing to gain by posting, which is exactly why the details are more reliable than a provider’s own marketing copy.

Which Should You Choose?

If you’re an EU/EEA resident staying inside the EU: check your home plan’s fair-use cap first. Australian carriers aren’t covered, so Australian travellers pay their home carrier’s international roaming rate instead.

Do I need an eSIM if I already have EU roaming through my home plan?

If you’re an EU/EEA resident with a plan from an EU/EEA operator, usually not, unless your fair-use data cap is too small or you’re visiting the UK or Switzerland, which sit outside the zone.

Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM in Europe?

It can be for a single-country trip. For multi-country trips, a regional eSIM is usually cheaper and far less hassle than buying a new SIM at every border.

Does an EU eSIM work in the UK?

Not automatically. Most Australian travellers don’t.
