Most explanations either bury you in chip architecture or skip the question that actually matters if you’re about to book a trip: does this change how you get data on your phone? Short answer: not yet, and probably not for a while. Here’s the longer answer, with real numbers behind it.

I run BazTel, a travel eSIM company. Before that, I spent years in investment analytics, reading market forecasts for a living. That habit never really left. So when I see headlines framing iSIM as the end of eSIM, I want to check the shipment data first. I did. Here’s what it shows.

        Table of Contents

The Short Version

An eSIM is a small chip soldered onto your phone’s circuit board, separate from the main processor. It stores your mobile plan digitally instead of on a removable card. An iSIM does the same job, but it’s built directly into the phone’s main processor, with no separate chip at all. For everyday use, both work identically: you scan a QR code or tap a link, and your phone connects. The difference lives entirely under the hood, invisible to the person actually using the phone.

What eSIM Actually Is

eSIM stands for embedded SIM. It’s a tiny chip, fixed permanently to your phone’s motherboard, doing the same job your old plastic SIM card used to do. You can’t remove it or move it between phones. Instead, you download a “profile” — your carrier account details — onto it remotely.

That’s why a travel eSIM feels almost instant. There’s no shop, no tray, no waiting on a courier. You buy a plan, scan a QR code or tap an activation link, and you’re online before your bags reach the carousel. More than a thousand phone models now support it, from budget Androids to every iPhone since the XS (see GSMA’s eSIM device tracker for the full breakdown).

What iSIM Actually Changes

iSIM stands for integrated SIM. Instead of sitting on its own chip, it’s built straight into the phone’s main processor — the same silicon running your camera and your apps. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and newer chipsets already include this capability, and other chipmakers are working on their own versions.

Think of it less as a new SIM and more as a new home address for the same SIM. The profile you download, the QR code you scan, the GSMA network standard behind it — none of that changes. What moves is where the secure vault sits inside the phone.

The Real Differences, Side by Side

eSIM

iSIM

Location

Separate chip on the motherboard

Built into the main processor (SoC)

Physical footprint

Small, but a distinct component

Effectively zero extra space

Power draw

Low

Lower still

Security model

Isolated secure element

Isolated secure enclave inside the chip

How you set it up

Scan a QR code or tap a link

Identical — same QR code, same link

Available today

Yes, on 1,000+ phone models

Chip-level only — no carrier activates it yet

The Part Most Articles Skip

This is where I want to slow down, because it’s the actual story.

Chips that support iSIM have been shipping inside flagship phones since 2024. Yet no carrier anywhere currently lets you activate a public mobile plan on that iSIM hardware. The capability exists in silicon. The commercial switch hasn’t been flipped. Kaleido Intelligence expects iSIM to reach roughly 630 million compatible devices by 2027 — still only about a fifth of all embedded-SIM devices, and most of that growth sits in industrial trackers and IoT sensors, not phones.

I found this out the unglamorous way. Earlier this year, I tested eSIM activation on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 phone, half-expecting an iSIM option somewhere in the carrier settings. There wasn’t one. The hardware was there. The network side simply wasn’t ready to talk to it. That gap between “the chip exists” and “you can use it” is the part most explainers rush past.

Why It Actually Matters

For travelers, right now: nothing changes.

If you’re buying a travel eSIM for an upcoming trip, iSIM isn’t a factor yet. Your phone runs on eSIM regardless of the chipset underneath it. Buy based on eSIM compatibility, not iSIM headlines.

For phone makers: thinner devices, easier manufacturing.

Removing a discrete SIM chip frees up board space for battery or camera hardware. That’s a real cost and design advantage — but it’s a manufacturing story, not a user-experience one.

For security teams: a smaller physical attack surface.

Because the secure element sits inside the main chip instead of a separate component, iSIM is harder to physically tamper with. That matters more for connected cars, payment terminals, and industrial sensors than it does for your holiday photos.

For the industry: eSIM’s own story isn’t finished either.

GSMA Intelligence puts global eSIM smartphone penetration at just 5% at the end of 2025, expecting it to roughly double to 10% by the end of 2026 (source). Most of the world hasn’t even switched to eSIM yet, let alone iSIM. The “iSIM replaces eSIM” framing skips over how much runway eSIM itself still has left.

Should You Wait for iSIM Before Buying a Travel eSIM?

No, for two reasons.

First, iSIM isn’t available to consumers for public network access anywhere yet. There’s nothing to wait for on your next trip.

Second, even once carriers do switch it on, the traveler-facing experience won’t change. You’ll still buy a plan, scan a code, and connect. iSIM changes what’s inside the phone, not what you do with it.

The one thing genuinely worth checking before any trip — iSIM or not — is whether your specific phone, bought in your specific region, actually has eSIM enabled. That varies more than people expect, especially with phones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong, or under certain carrier locks.

How to Check What Your Phone Actually Has

Dial *#06# on your phone. If a long EID number appears, your phone has eSIM hardware.

Check Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (Android) for an “Add eSIM” option.

Don’t bother checking for iSIM specifically. If your phone supports eSIM, that’s the technology you’ll actually be using — whatever chip sits underneath it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is iSIM better than eSIM?

Not in any way you’ll notice yet. iSIM is smaller and more power-efficient at the hardware level, but the two work identically for the person using the phone — same QR code, same setup, same underlying GSMA standard.

Can I use iSIM for travel right now?

No. No carrier currently activates public network profiles on iSIM hardware. Every travel eSIM sold today, including BazTel’s, runs on standard eSIM.

Will iSIM replace eSIM?

Eventually, in some device categories. But analysts expect iSIM to make up only around a fifth of embedded-SIM devices by 2027, and most of that growth is in IoT hardware rather than phones.

Does my phone have iSIM?

Some 2024-and-later flagship chipsets, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and newer, include iSIM-capable hardware. No phone currently lets you activate it for a mobile plan, so check for eSIM support instead — that’s what actually determines whether you can use a travel eSIM.

The Bottom Line

“iSIM vs eSIM” sounds like a fork in the road. Right now, it isn’t one. eSIM works exactly the same today as it did yesterday, across more than a thousand phone models and 160-plus countries. When iSIM eventually opens up to consumers, buying and using a travel eSIM won’t look any different — you’ll still buy, scan, and go. The engineering underneath is genuinely interesting. How you use it isn’t changing anytime soon.

Before your next trip, check your device against BazTel’s eSIM compatibility guide, or browse plans for your destination directly.

Blog Author

Peter

I'm Peter, the founder of BazTel.
