There’s no tray, no pin, no physical card at all. Google confirmed it quietly in its own support pages: every Pixel 10 except the 10 Pro Fold now ships eSIM-only in the US.

That hardware change is exactly why getting these settings right actually matters. A few years ago, a wrong toggle meant falling back to a spare physical SIM. On the newest Pixel, there’s no fallback. Just settings — and one of them isn’t the one most guides tell you to check.

        Table of Contents

The short version
Pixel’s roaming controls live under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, not Connections or Cellular. The setting that breaks travel eSIMs most often isn’t Roaming — it’s Automatic data switching, a call-continuity feature, not a data-saving one.

A Preferred network type locked to 5G-only can silently block a travel eSIM on a partner network that only carries 4G roaming traffic.Pixel 10 (except the 10 Pro Fold) has no physical SIM slot in the US, so this menu isn’t optional on that phone anymore.

The menu Pixel hides in a different place than everyone else

Every phone brand puts these controls somewhere slightly different, and most troubleshooting guides just say “check your settings” without saying where. On Pixel, running close-to-stock Android, everything sits in one place: Settings, then Network & internet, then SIMs. Tap your travel eSIM’s line, and five controls decide whether it works once you land.

Mobile data — whether this line is allowed to use data at all

Roaming — whether the line may use data on a foreign carrier’s network

Automatic data switching — whether the phone can move data to your other SIM on its own

Preferred network type — which generations of network (5G, LTE, and so on) this line will connect to

Access point names — the technical connection details, usually configured automatically

Automatic data switching: the setting almost every guide gets wrong

Most troubleshooting articles tell you to turn off Automatic data switching, without explaining what it’s actually for. It isn’t a battery-saver. It isn’t a data-saver either. According to Google’s own Pixel support documentation, it exists so a Pixel running two active lines can take a call on either SIM, even while a call is already active on the other one.

To make that work, the phone needs the ability to shift data onto whichever SIM currently needs it for a call — which can include quietly pulling data back onto your home SIM to keep it reachable, even after you’ve correctly set your travel eSIM as the default for data. That’s the actual mechanism behind a complaint travelers raise constantly: data usage showing up on the home carrier the same day they landed, despite having “done everything right.”

The fix is simple once you understand why it happens. Turn Automatic data switching off for the trip. Turn it back on once you’re home, if you use two lines regularly.

The 5G trap: Preferred network type

This one gets skipped in almost every guide, and it causes a specific, confusing symptom: full signal bars, a connected network name, and zero data. The likely cause is Preferred network type set to 5G-only, or a 5G mode with no fallback.

Travel eSIMs generally connect through a wholesale roaming agreement with a local partner network, and in my own testing across several countries, that agreement doesn’t always include the partner’s 5G layer — even in markets where 5G is common for local customers. Leaving Preferred network type on its automatic or broadest setting avoids the problem entirely. If you’ve already locked it to 5G and lost data, that setting is usually the first thing worth checking, before assuming the eSIM itself has failed.

Setting up a travel eSIM on Pixel before you fly

Install the eSIM profile over Wi-Fi, ideally a day or two before departure, so activation issues surface while you still have options.

Rename the line under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, so it’s obviously your travel line and not your home number.

Turn on Mobile data for that line, and set it as your default for Mobile data under “Your primary SIMs.”

Turn on Roaming for the travel eSIM specifically — this is a per-line setting, not a phone-wide one.

Turn off Automatic data switching for the length of the trip.

Leave Preferred network type on automatic unless you have a specific reason to lock it.

Leave Access point names alone. It configures itself on connection; editing it manually is a common cause of self-inflicted problems.

Two eSIMs, one phone: Fold and Pro quirks

Pixel 7 and later can run two eSIM profiles at once, if the carriers involved allow it. The Pixel 9 series — Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, and 9 Pro Fold — all support either two active eSIMs or one eSIM plus a physical SIM. On Pixel 10 in the US, every model except the 10 Pro Fold has no physical slot, so a second line means a second eSIM by default.

Running two eSIMs means two independent sets of these controls. Each line gets its own Roaming and Preferred network type toggle under its own tab in Mobile network settings. Fixing one line’s settings doesn’t touch the other, which is worth remembering if only one of your two lines is misbehaving abroad.

Foldables add one more wrinkle worth knowing before you rely on this setup: not every fold on the market handles eSIM the same way. Our guide to eSIM on foldable phones covers which models support dual active eSIM and which don’t.

Coming home

Don’t delete the travel eSIM the moment you land. Go back to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, tap the travel line, and switch it to inactive instead. The profile stays stored for the next trip, and reactivating it later is a single tap rather than a fresh install.

Turn Roaming back off on your home SIM if you’d switched it on for any reason, and re-enable Automatic data switching if that’s normally how you run two lines day to day.

Frequently asked questions

Where are eSIM roaming settings on a Google Pixel?

Settings > Network & internet > SIMs. Tap the specific eSIM line to see Mobile data, Roaming, Automatic data switching, and Preferred network type for that line.

Why does my Pixel keep using my home SIM for data abroad?

Automatic data switching is the most common cause. It’s a Google feature that intentionally moves data between SIMs to keep both lines reachable for calls, and it can override your default data SIM choice while it’s turned on.

Does Roaming need to be on for a travel eSIM to work on Pixel?

Yes. A travel eSIM connects through a local partner network, which your Pixel treats as roaming regardless of the country you bought the plan for. With Roaming off on that line, you’ll have signal but no data.

What does Automatic data switching do on Pixel?

It lets a Pixel running two active SIMs take a call on either line, even mid-call on the other, by shifting data to whichever SIM needs it. It’s a call-continuity feature, not a data- or battery-saving one.

Does Pixel 10 have a SIM card slot?

No, not in the US. Every Pixel 10 model except the 10 Pro Fold ships eSIM-only in the US, per Google’s own support documentation.

Can a Pixel run two eSIMs at once?

Yes, on Pixel 7 and later, if both carriers support it. Each eSIM line has its own independent Roaming and network settings.

Blog Author

Peter

I'm Peter, the founder of BazTel.
