Most home carriers still bill you the moment your phone registers on a foreign network. This happens even with a travel eSIM installed, and even if you never open a browser. To actually stop the charges, lock down three things: your home line’s data roaming setting, your phone’s automatic network switching, and any day-pass plan your carrier already switched on for you.

Below is the exact sequence I use on every trip, plus the mistakes that catch even careful travellers.

        Table of Contents

The One Setting Everyone Talks About (And Why It Isn’t Enough)

Nearly every eSIM guide says the same thing. Install your travel eSIM, switch off data roaming on your home SIM, and you’re covered. That advice is correct as far as it goes. It’s also incomplete.

A roaming charge isn’t only about data. Carriers bill you the moment your phone registers with a network abroad. A call, a text, or a background app checking for updates can all do it. That’s true regardless of whether your eSIM is quietly handling your actual browsing.

What Actually Triggers a Roaming Charge

Three separate events can start the meter running on your home line. Data is only one of them:

Making or receiving a phone call

Sending a text message (most carriers don’t charge for texts you receive, only ones you send)

Background data — an app checking for updates, a weather widget refreshing, even a voicemail notification

Telstra’s own terms make this explicit. A Day Pass charge applies on any day a service is used overseas, and that includes background data, not just data you use on purpose — as set out on Telstra’s International Day Pass summary.

AT&T runs a similar model in the US. Its International Day Pass support page confirms the pass activates the first time you use data, make or receive a call, or send a text in a covered destination. From there, it charges a flat daily fee on top of whatever else you’re paying.

None of that has anything to do with your travel eSIM. It’s entirely about what your home SIM is doing in the background.

Your Carrier Already Opted You In

Here’s the part most roaming guides skip. On many plans, international roaming isn’t something you switch on before a trip. It’s already on, by default, unless you’ve turned it off yourself.

Telstra says as much on its own support pages. International roaming and Day Pass are automatically enabled on eligible plans, unless a customer has already switched them off. Optus and Vodafone run similar opt-out models, according to WhistleOut’s comparison of Australian carrier roaming rates. Each has a per-day roaming add-on, around AU$5, that activates the instant your phone is used overseas.

This flips the usual advice on its head. You’re not deciding whether to add roaming before you fly. You’re deciding whether to actively remove something your carrier switched on for you, possibly years ago.

The Pre-Flight Lockdown: Six Steps, in This Order

Do this at home, on Wi-Fi, with your eSIM already installed. The order matters — some settings only appear once the eSIM profile exists on the device.

Install your travel eSIM before you leave. Do it on Wi-Fi, days ahead of departure, so there’s no scramble at the airport.

Set the travel eSIM as your default line for data. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data, then choose the travel eSIM. On Android: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Mobile Data.

Turn off automatic data switching. iPhone calls this “Allow Cellular Data Switching” (Settings > Cellular). Leave it on and your phone can silently fall back to your home SIM the moment the eSIM signal dips.

Turn off data roaming on your home SIM specifically. Not the eSIM — same settings menu, different line.

Open your carrier’s app and check for an active day pass. If international roaming or a Day Pass is already switched on, turn it off. If your carrier allows a spend cap instead, set that.

Decide what to do about calls and texts. If you want to keep your home number reachable, read the next section first.

Keeping Your Home Number Alive for Bank Codes and 2FA

Most travellers still want their home number reachable. A bank’s one-time code, a delivery text, or a call from family are common reasons. The good news: this is usually the one part of your home SIM you can safely leave switched on.

Both Telstra and AT&T exclude inbound text messages from their day-pass triggers. Receiving a code by SMS typically costs nothing extra. Making a call, answering one, or sending a reply text is different. Each of those still counts as roaming usage and can trigger the daily fee.

If you want to be certain, forward calls to voicemail or a VoIP number before you fly. Handle everything else — messaging, calls home, banking apps — over your travel eSIM’s data instead.

Three Carriers, Three Traps

Roaming rules aren’t the same everywhere. The trap that catches an Australian traveller isn’t the one that catches an American.

Home carrier

What happens by default

Typical cost if untouched

The fix

Telstra / Optus / Vodafone (AU)

Day Pass auto-enabled; charges on first call, text sent, or background data

AU$5–$10/day — around $140 for two weeks in Japan

Switch off Day Pass and data roaming in the carrier app before departure

AT&T / Verizon / T-Mobile (US)

International Day Pass often stays on a line until manually removed

US$10–$12/day flat fee, plus overages outside covered countries

Remove the pass in the carrier app, or disable the line entirely

EU/UK, for AU or US travellers

“Roam like home” only protects EU- or EEA-issued SIMs

Full pay-per-use roaming rates, no protection

A regional eSIM is the only real fix — the EU rule doesn’t apply to you

That last row surprises a lot of travellers. The EU’s roaming rules, formalised under Regulation (EU) 2022/612, are genuinely free for EU and EEA residents through 2032, as the European Parliament confirms. They do nothing for a Telstra or Verizon SIM crossing into France or Italy. An Australian or American line pays full roaming rates there, unless it’s on a local or regional eSIM.

A Real Bill-Shock Story

One widely reported case involved an AT&T customer who came home to a bill running into the thousands of dollars. He’d used only a few gigabytes of data, which he believed his International Day Pass already covered. The carrier opened an internal investigation once the story spread. The exact cause was never made fully public. But the shape of the mistake is familiar: a day-pass plan that didn’t behave the way he expected, on a line he assumed was protected.

The six-step lockdown above exists to remove that assumption. Check the settings yourself, before you fly, rather than trusting a plan to work the way its name suggests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does installing a travel eSIM automatically stop home carrier roaming charges?

No. Installing the eSIM adds a second line for data. Your home SIM keeps running in the background unless you separately turn off its roaming and remove any auto-enrolled day pass.

Will I be charged if I leave my physical SIM in just to receive texts?

Usually not for texts you receive. Telstra and AT&T both exclude inbound SMS from their day-pass triggers. You can still be billed for calls you make or answer, and for texts you send.

Do I need to physically remove my SIM card?

No. On a dual-SIM or SIM-plus-eSIM phone, you can disable the home line in software instead, under Settings > Cellular or Network & Internet.

Is roaming free in Europe for Australian or US travellers?

No. The EU’s “roam like home” rules only apply to SIMs issued by an EU or EEA carrier. An Australian- or US-issued line pays full roaming rates in Europe unless it’s on a travel eSIM.

What if my home carrier already includes free international roaming?

A few premium plans do. Check your plan’s inclusions before buying an eSIM. If roaming is already free and unlimited on your plan, a travel eSIM may only be worth it for better speed or coverage in specific countries.

The Bottom Line

A travel eSIM solves the data problem. It doesn’t automatically solve the settings problem sitting underneath it — and that’s the part that generates most of the surprise bills. Handle the home SIM deliberately, in the order above, and the eSIM does exactly what you bought it for.

I’m the founder of BazTel, an Australian-founded travel eSIM provider covering 160+ countries.
