In most cases nothing is wrong with the eSIM itself. The real cause usually sits in how your phone&#8217;s dual-SIM software behaves, what the plan actually covers, or a tower it was never meant to reach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Search this exact problem and you&#8217;ll find the same three steps on almost every site: turn off data roaming on your home SIM, turn it on for the eSIM, and set the eSIM as your default data line. That advice is correct, and I&#8217;ll cover it briefly below. It&#8217;s also where nearly every other article stops, and it doesn&#8217;t explain why travellers with all three settings right still come home to a surprise bill. After years of testing eSIMs on my own trips, and later while building BazTel&#8217;s own network, I&#8217;ve traced the leftover charges to six places most guides never mention.<\/p>\n\n\n    <nav id=\"dynamic-toc\" class=\"dynamic-toc\" aria-label=\"Table of Contents\">\n        <strong>Table of Contents<\/strong>\n        <ol id=\"toc-list\"><\/ol>\n    <\/nav>\n    \n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-start-with-the-setting-everyone-already-gets-right\">1. Start With the Setting Everyone Already Gets Right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rule these three out first. They resolve most cases on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Home SIM: Data Roaming switched off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Travel eSIM: Data Roaming switched on. It feels backwards, but the eSIM needs it to register on a local partner network, and your plan already covers that cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobile data line: set to the eSIM, not the home SIM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>iPhone: Settings &gt; Cellular &gt; tap each line &gt; toggle Data Roaming. Android: Settings &gt; Network &amp; internet &gt; SIMs &gt; tap each line &gt; toggle Roaming. If those three are correct and a charge still landed, one of the next five is the likely cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-your-phone-s-modem-can-only-fully-listen-to-one-sim-at-a-time\">2. Your Phone&#8217;s Modem Can Only Fully Listen to One SIM at a Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most eSIM phones, including the iPhone and most Android flagships, run on Dual SIM Dual Standby, or DSDS. Both lines stay reachable while idle, but they share one radio underneath. When a call needs that radio, the phone briefly hands it over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple documents this directly: with <em>Allow Cellular Data Switching<\/em> turned on, taking a call on your home number can make the phone automatically shift data onto that same line for the length of the call, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/HT209044\">Apple&#8217;s own dual-SIM support page<\/a>. It switches back afterward, but the data used in that window still counts as roaming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fix: turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching (or its Android equivalent) for any trip where cost matters more than uninterrupted calls, and route calls through WhatsApp, FaceTime or a similar app on the eSIM&#8217;s data instead of your home number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-the-esim-ran-out-of-country-not-data\">3. The eSIM Ran Out of Country, Not Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A local eSIM works only inside the one country it was sold for. Cross the border, and it doesn&#8217;t overage or roam onto the next network. It simply has nothing to connect to. A regional eSIM is a different product, built to move across a fixed group of countries, and it only drops out once you leave that specific list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mix-up happens when someone buys a single-country eSIM, assumes it will carry them into the next stop on a multi-country trip, and watches their phone quietly fall back to the home SIM the moment the eSIM has nothing left to attach to. Because the home line is still on standby, as covered in the section above, it fills the gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fix: before a multi-country trip, check a plan&#8217;s exact country list, not just its regional name. A &#8220;Southeast Asia&#8221; plan and a &#8220;Thailand&#8221; plan can look similar in a cart but behave very differently at a land crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-the-charge-that-has-nothing-to-do-with-the-esim-at-all\">4. The Charge That Has Nothing to Do With the eSIM at All<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some roaming charges appear without a border ever being crossed, and even with a perfectly configured eSIM. Signals don&#8217;t respect borders, and a stronger tower across a coastline or land border can outcompete a weaker one at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research from comparison site Uswitch, reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/itbrief.co.uk\/story\/millions-hit-by-roaming-charges-on-uk-coast-borders\">IT Brief UK in mid-2026<\/a>, found that more than five million people in the UK had their phones connect to an overseas network while still on home soil, and roughly one in ten adults had faced a roaming alert or charge as a result. Three in four of the people surveyed had no idea it could happen at all. The report flagged England&#8217;s south coast near Dover and the Northern Ireland border as the highest-risk spots, and the same physics apply to any coastline or land border near a population centre, cruise ships included.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has nothing to do with a travel eSIM&#8217;s setup. It&#8217;s the home line grabbing a foreign tower simply because it&#8217;s still allowed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fix: in border regions, coastal areas or on a ship, don&#8217;t just toggle data roaming off on the home line. Turn the whole line off. iPhone: Settings &gt; Cellular &gt; tap the line &gt; Turn On This Line &gt; off. Android: Settings &gt; Network &amp; internet &gt; SIMs &gt; tap the line &gt; toggle off. A disabled line can&#8217;t roam onto anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-a-managed-work-phone-plays-by-someone-else-s-rules\">5. A Managed Work Phone Plays by Someone Else&#8217;s Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A phone enrolled in a company mobile device management (MDM) profile can have roaming and data-switching settings locked by IT policy, sometimes overriding whatever you set manually and without any warning on screen. Business travellers are among the most likely to install a travel eSIM correctly and still get billed, simply because the setting that matters isn&#8217;t theirs to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fix: ask IT to exempt the travel eSIM line, or to confirm the managed profile isn&#8217;t quietly re-enabling data roaming on the home line while you&#8217;re abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-sometimes-roaming-on-the-screen-isn-t-a-charge\">6. Sometimes &#8220;Roaming&#8221; on the Screen Isn&#8217;t a Charge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One more source of confusion, though not a cost: many travel eSIMs work by registering you as a visitor on a local partner network. Your phone may show a roaming icon for that eSIM line even though the plan is prepaid and carries no extra fee. That&#8217;s expected behaviour, not a bill in progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way to tell the difference is to check your actual account balance or bill, not the icon in the status bar. The icon reflects a technical registration.
