Here&#8217;s the honest, technical answer \u2014 not the vague &#8220;it depends&#8221; you&#8217;ll find elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Short answer: <\/strong>most rooted Android phones and jailbroken iPhones will either refuse the install, activate a profile that never connects, or drop out mid-trip. This isn&#8217;t because eSIM technology dislikes modified phones. It&#8217;s because installation leans on a hardware trust check, and rooting or jailbreaking is designed to defeat exactly that check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s why, what I saw when I tested it, and what to do instead.<\/p>\n\n\n    <nav id=\"dynamic-toc\" class=\"dynamic-toc\" aria-label=\"Table of Contents\">\n        <strong>Table of Contents<\/strong>\n        <ol id=\"toc-list\"><\/ol>\n    <\/nav>\n    \n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-not-the-esim-that-s-broken-it-s-the-trust-check\">It&#8217;s not the eSIM that&#8217;s broken \u2014 it&#8217;s the trust check<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An eSIM isn&#8217;t a file. It&#8217;s a profile written to a tiny secure chip called the eUICC (embedded universal integrated circuit card). This is governed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/esim\/about\/\">GSMA&#8217;s remote SIM provisioning standard<\/a>. The chip sits physically apart from your operating system. Not even you, with full admin rights, can read its keys directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rooting or jailbreaking doesn&#8217;t touch that chip. It removes the software fence around your OS instead, so apps can grab elevated permissions. That&#8217;s the exact signal eSIM installers and carrier apps are built to detect \u2014 and refuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Android, this is the Play Integrity API. Google tightened it considerably in 2025. Part of the verdict now comes from a hardware attestation at the bootloader, not just software flags. That&#8217;s a real shift. Workarounds that fooled the older SafetyNet check in 2023 or 2024 often fail today&#8217;s hardware-backed version. The install hung at the network-check step, then closed with a generic error. Airalo, for one, states plainly that it won&#8217;t run its install flow on a device it detects as rooted or jailbroken. That&#8217;s a deliberate product choice, not a bug.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the jailbroken iPhone, the eSIM screen showed up fine too. But Cellular settings turned unreliable once the jailbreak tweak reloaded on reboot. One profile silently reverted to &#8220;Not Activated&#8221; after a routine iOS security patch broke the jailbreak.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>None of this means the eSIM chip failed. It just needs a slot and signal. An eSIM install actively checks device integrity before writing a profile. That check is what root interferes with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Myth: <\/strong>If the app opens and lets you scan a QR code, the eSIM will work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fact: <\/strong>The scan just tells the app which profile to try.
