My eSIM was already installed. I&#8217;d set it up weeks earlier from my couch in Sydney. What I hadn&#8217;t done was actually switch it on before landing. So there I stood, bags at my feet, watching Grab spin its loading wheel. A very persistent man in a Hawaiian shirt offered me \u201cbest price, no meter\u201d to my hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That gap between \u201cinstalled\u201d and \u201cactive\u201d is the whole story most eSIM articles miss.<\/p>\n\n\n    <nav id=\"dynamic-toc\" class=\"dynamic-toc\" aria-label=\"Table of Contents\">\n        <strong>Table of Contents<\/strong>\n        <ol id=\"toc-list\"><\/ol>\n    <\/nav>\n    \n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-short-answer\">The short answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ride-hailing apps like Uber, Grab, Bolt, Ola and inDrive are built entirely around live location and server communication. No connection means no GPS ping, no driver match, no fare calculation and no payment authorisation. An eSIM that&#8217;s sitting dormant in your phone&#8217;s settings does nothing for you. It only works once it&#8217;s actively carrying your data. That means installed, switched on, and set as your default data line before you land, not after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-these-apps-can-t-work-offline-even-for-a-second\">Why these apps can&#8217;t work offline, even for a second<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s tempting to assume the app just needs your GPS chip. It doesn&#8217;t. Your phone&#8217;s GPS only tells the app where you are. Everything else, the part that actually gets you a car, happens on a server somewhere else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you open Uber or Grab and tap \u201crequest ride,\u201d your phone sends your coordinates to the company&#8217;s servers. Those servers cross-reference nearby drivers, calculate a route and a price, and push a match back to your screen. Every one of those steps needs an internet connection. Take the connection away at any point, and the request simply times out. Ride-hailing providers list the same dependencies in their own travel support guidance. Requesting a ride, tracking GPS, messaging your driver and authorising payment are functions that run over data, not over your phone number or physical SIM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Airport Wi-Fi doesn&#8217;t fix this either. It&#8217;s usually the first thing to fail when three planeloads of jetlagged passengers try to connect at once. Public networks aren&#8217;t somewhere you want your payment app open, anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-you-need-way-less-data-than-you-think\">You need way less data than you think<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the part that surprises most people. There&#8217;s a common assumption that ride-hailing apps are data-hungry. So travellers over-buy huge eSIM plans \u201cjust in case.\u201d In reality, a single ride barely registers. Independent testing by consumer site Canstar Blue found that a full 25-minute Uber trip used only around 20MB of data, booking through to drop-off. Most of that went toward the live map, not the ride request itself. Even generous carrier estimates put typical usage at roughly 50MB an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 1GB eSIM plan, one of the cheapest tiers most providers sell, could realistically cover several dozen rides. Add in maps, messaging and boarding passes, and it still lasts an entire short trip. You don&#8217;t need the biggest plan on the shelf. You need the one that&#8217;s already turned on when you land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Compare that to leaving roaming switched on with your home carrier instead. <a href=\"https:\/\/telconews.com.au\/story\/majority-of-australians-wary-of-roaming-fees-as-travel-surges\">A 2025 Optus survey<\/a> found that 82% of Australians have been hit by an unexpected roaming charge, or worry about one every time they travel. A handful of Uber rides on roaming data can cost more than an entire trip&#8217;s worth of eSIM data. You won&#8217;t find out until the bill lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-scam-angle-nobody-talks-about\">The scam angle nobody talks about<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a second reason an active connection matters. It&#8217;s less about convenience, and more about who&#8217;s opening your car door. Licensed ride-hailing drivers are vetted, tracked and tied to a fare shown on your screen before you get in. Unofficial airport touts are not, and they specifically target the exact moment your phone has no signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A widely shared warning from Shark Tank investor Lori Greiner made the point well. Licensed taxi drivers aren&#8217;t allowed to solicit customers inside the terminal, so anyone approaching you at baggage claim almost certainly isn&#8217;t one. Airport authorities in South Africa have run public campaigns making the same point. Unlicensed operators posing as e-hailing drivers were caught soliciting travellers directly inside terminal buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A phone with an active data connection is, in a strange way, a safety device. It lets you book a verified car from inside the terminal. You see the driver&#8217;s plate and rating on screen, and skip the negotiation with a stranger entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-mistake-almost-every-traveller-makes\">The mistake almost every traveller makes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people don&#8217;t skip buying an eSIM. They buy it, install it, and then leave it inactive until they land. At that point they discover that downloading a profile itself needs a live internet connection they no longer have easy access to. It&#8217;s a bit of a catch-22, and it&#8217;s exactly what happened to me in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fix is simple, but it has to happen before you board:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Install the eSIM at home, on Wi-Fi<\/strong>, at least a day before departure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set it as your data line<\/strong> for the destination, not just installed alongside your home SIM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Turn off data roaming<\/strong> on your primary SIM so you&#8217;re not double-charged the second you land.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Switch the eSIM on in flight mode<\/strong>, so the moment the wheels touch down, you&#8217;re already connected.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Do this once, and every ride-hailing app on your phone works the instant you clear the jet bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-picking-a-plan-that-actually-matches-how-you-ll-use-it\">Picking a plan that actually matches how you&#8217;ll use it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A ride-hailing habit barely dents a data plan, as you now know. Wi-Fi alone won&#8217;t cover you once you leave the terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I use a ride-hailing app with no SIM at all?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not reliably. You need some form of active mobile data, whether that&#8217;s an eSIM, a local SIM or roaming. An eSIM installed and switched on before departure is usually the cheapest and least hassle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much eSIM data does ride-hailing actually use?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very little. A typical ride uses somewhere between 20MB and 50MB. Even a small starter plan comfortably covers a week of regular trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bottom-line\">The bottom line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An eSIM sitting unused in your settings menu is just a line item, not a connection. Ride-hailing apps need live, active data every single time you tap \u201crequest.\u201d That&#8217;s how they talk to their servers, match you with a driver, and calculate your fare. Get it installed and switched on before you fly, and it&#8217;ll quietly do its job for the entire trip.
