Either your phone can’t open a data session (an APN problem). Or it has a session but can’t look up website names (a DNS problem). A quick test tells you which one. Type 1.1.1.1 into your browser. If that page loads but google.com doesn’t, it’s DNS. If nothing loads at all, start with the APN.

        Table of Contents

Signal bars and internet are not the same thing

Most guides stop at “turn on data roaming.” That fixes a lot of cases. But it doesn’t explain why a phone can show full bars and still load nothing.

Your connection works in layers. Each layer can fail on its own, and each one fails in a different way.

Layer

What it does

What you see when it breaks

1. Everything in this guide is about layers 2 to 4. If you’re stuck at layer 1, check our guide on how long eSIM activation takes first.

The 60-second test that tells you which layer is broken

I built this triage after seeing the same support pattern again and again. Travellers change five settings at once. Then they can’t tell which one mattered. Do these three checks first, in order.

Check 1: Is any data moving? Open your phone’s mobile data usage screen and find the eSIM line. Note the number, open any app, and look again. If it never moves, the data session isn’t open. That points to the APN.

Check 2: Does a messaging app work? Send a WhatsApp or iMessage text. Messaging apps hold connections open and can survive shaky name lookups longer. If messages send but websites fail, suspect DNS. Our guide to WhatsApp on a data-only eSIM covers the app side.

Check 3: The 1.1.1.1 test. Type 1.1.1.1 into your browser’s address bar. This is a public resolver page reached by its number, so no name lookup is needed. Then try google.com.

What happens

Broken layer

Go to

Nothing loads, data counter stuck

Data session

APN fixes

1.1.1.1 loads, google.com doesn’t

Name lookup

DNS fixes

Both load in one browser, fail in another app

Filter or VPN

Privacy filter fixes

Everything fails on the eSIM, works on Wi-Fi

Filter or APN

Filters first, then APN

Do the basics first (30 seconds)

Before touching the APN, rule out the three usual suspects:

Data roaming is on for the eSIM line. A travel eSIM runs on a partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming.

The eSIM is your mobile data line. On dual-SIM phones, data often stays on your home SIM. Our dual eSIM vs physical SIM guide explains how the lines split.

You’ve toggled Airplane Mode. Leave it on for 15 seconds. This forces a fresh network registration.

Still nothing? Now the useful part starts. If your home SIM is also active, read up on avoiding home carrier roaming charges before you test further.

The APN fields most guides skip

The APN (Access Point Name) tells your phone which gateway to use for data. Most guides say “enter the APN from your provider.” That’s true, but a correct APN name can still fail. Here’s why.

BazTel customers: where to find your APN. Log in to your BazTel dashboard and go to Manage eSIMs. Click Install eSIM, then review the Manual installation section. It shows the APN Name and the APN to use for your plan. Enter both exactly as shown there, then check the fields below.

1. You edited the wrong protocol field (Android)

This is the one I see missed most often. Android APN screens have two settings: APN protocol and APN roaming protocol. Android’s own developer documentation describes the second as the protocol used while the device is roaming.

A travel eSIM is always roaming. So your phone reads the roaming protocol, not the first one. People change “APN protocol” to IPv4/IPv6 and see no difference. The fix is to set APN roaming protocol to IPv4/IPv6. If that fails, try IPv4 alone. Some partner networks won’t hand out an IPv6 address to roaming users.

2. The APN type is blank or missing “default”

On Android, the APN type tells the phone what the profile is for. If it’s empty or set only to “mms,” the phone may not route normal traffic through it. Enter default, supl unless your provider says otherwise.

3. The right APN exists, but it isn’t selected

Android can keep several APNs in the list. Only the one with the filled radio button is active. Old entries from a previous travel eSIM or your home carrier sometimes stay selected. Tap the correct one, then toggle Airplane Mode.

4. A tiny typing error

APN values are short and unforgiving. A trailing space from a copy-paste can break the session. So can autocorrect adding a capital letter or a full stop. Type it by hand. Leave username and password blank unless your provider gives them.

5. iPhone-specific traps

On iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data), select your eSIM, then Cellular Data Network. Apple notes you can only view or edit the APN if your carrier allows it. Two details matter:

iOS updates reset manual APN edits. Apple warns that settings edited before an update return to defaults. If data died right after an update, re-enter the APN.

Old configuration profiles win. Per Apple, “Reset Settings” falls back to an installed profile’s values, not the carrier’s. Check Settings, then General, then VPN & Device Management. Remove any old travel SIM or APN profile you no longer use.

The DNS layer: connected, but names won’t resolve

If the 1.1.1.1 test loaded and google.com didn’t, your data session works. Your phone just can’t translate names into addresses. Almost every competing guide skips this layer.

Android Private DNS set to a custom hostname

Android’s Private DNS encrypts name lookups. Google’s own help page recommends keeping it on, and “Automatic” is the safe choice. The problem is the third option: a custom hostname such as an ad-blocker or family filter.

In that mode, your phone uses only that resolver. If the roaming network can’t reach it, lookups fail completely. You’ll often see “Private DNS server cannot be accessed” or “Mobile network has no internet access.”

Fix: Go to Settings, Network & internet, Private DNS. Pick Automatic. On Samsung, look under Connections, More connection settings. Retest before switching back.

iPhone DNS profiles and ad-blocking apps

iOS has no single Private DNS switch. Instead, apps and profiles install DNS settings. Ad blockers, parental controls and work profiles all do this. Check Settings, General, VPN & Device Management for a DNS entry. Disable it for a moment and retest.

iCloud Private Relay on your eSIM line

Private Relay sends Safari traffic through two relays. Some roaming networks don’t play nicely with it. The telltale sign is Safari failing while other apps work.

Apple lets you turn off Private Relay for one network only. Go to Settings, Cellular, tap your eSIM, and switch off Limit IP Address Tracking. This setting belongs to that single line, so your home SIM and Wi-Fi keep their protection.

VPNs with a kill switch

An always-on VPN blocks all traffic until its tunnel connects. On a new roaming network, the tunnel may never finish. Pause the VPN, confirm the eSIM works, then turn it back on. If you want privacy on the road, our BazTel vs Saily comparison weighs bundled VPNs against plain data.

Symptom map: find your fix fast

What you see

Most likely cause

Fix

Full bars, data counter stuck at zero

APN or roaming protocol

Set APN roaming protocol to IPv4/IPv6

WhatsApp works, Chrome doesn’t

Private DNS hostname

Set Private DNS to Automatic

Safari fails, other apps fine

iCloud Private Relay

Turn off Limit IP Address Tracking on the eSIM line

Worked yesterday, dead after iOS update

APN reset by update

Re-enter the APN

Works on Wi-Fi only

VPN or DNS profile

Pause VPN, disable DNS profile

“SOS only” or “No Service”

Network layer

See our FAQ and activation guide

What to send support if nothing works

A good support message cuts resolution time. Include these five things:

Phone model and OS version.

The network name shown in your status bar or SIM settings.

A screenshot of your APN screen.

Your result from the 1.1.1.1 test.

Whether the data counter moves at all.

With those, a support agent can usually tell the layer in one reply. Internet needs a working data session and working name lookups on top. A wrong APN, roaming turned off, or a custom DNS setting can each block data while bars stay full.

How do I know if my eSIM problem is APN or DNS?

Type 1.1.1.1 into your browser. If that page loads but normal websites don’t, it’s DNS. If nothing loads and your data counter stays still, it’s the APN or data session.

Should I turn off Private DNS when travelling?

You don’t need to turn it off. Set it to Automatic. That keeps encryption where the network supports it and avoids total failure when a custom resolver can’t be reached.

Can iCloud Private Relay stop my eSIM working?

It can stop Safari loading on some roaming networks.
