Versions sold in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, some US carrier variants, and many budget models ship without a working eSIM. Sometimes the chip is missing. Sometimes firmware switches it off. The name on the box stays the same, but the model number changes. Check that number, and look for an EID, before you buy a travel eSIM.

Two people stand at a departure gate. Both hold an iPhone 16 Pro. One installs a travel eSIM in under a minute. The other taps through Settings and finds nothing to tap.

Same name. Same camera. Same price bracket. Different phone.

I’m Peter, founder of BazTel, so I have an obvious interest in eSIM. I also spend a lot of time sorting out exactly this problem for travellers. The frustrating part is that nothing on the outside tells you. You find out when it’s too late to fix.

This guide explains why regional phone models exist, why some of them skip eSIM entirely, and how to check yours in about 60 seconds.

        Table of Contents

A “model” is really a family of phones

When Apple, Samsung or Xiaomi launch a phone, they don’t make one device. They make several regional variants under one marketing name.

Each variant can differ in three layers. Only one of those layers needs to fail for eSIM to disappear.

Layer

What it controls

Can you fix it?

Hardware

Whether an eUICC (the eSIM chip) is physically on the board

No

Firmware / region code

Whether the software lets you add an eSIM, even if the chip exists

Rarely, and risky

Carrier lock

Whether the phone accepts eSIM profiles from other networks

Yes, via your carrier

Most online eSIM compatibility lists only name the model. That’s why so many people buy a plan for a “compatible” phone that can’t install it. If you want the technical background on that chip, our guide on how eSIM cards work covers it in plain English.

Why manufacturers build no-eSIM versions on purpose

It isn’t laziness or cost-cutting alone. Four forces push a manufacturer to leave eSIM out of a market.

1. Regulators decide, not phone makers

China is the clearest example. Mobile numbers there are tied to real-name ID checks, and eSIM for phones needed government sign-off. That approval only arrived recently. On 13 October 2025, China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom announced approval for commercial eSIM trials on smartphones.

Until then, building eSIM into a China-market phone was pointless. No local carrier could use it.

2. Some markets love two physical SIMs

Hong Kong and Macao shoppers often carry two numbers. One might be local and one from the mainland. A dual nano-SIM tray suits that habit, and physical SIMs were cheap and everywhere.

So Apple built dual nano-SIM iPhones for these markets. Apple’s own support page confirms that certain iPhones in China mainland, Hong Kong and Macao use two nano-SIM cards instead of eSIM.

3. Every chip costs money on a budget phone

An eUICC is a small part. On a flagship it barely registers. On a mid-range phone sold in huge volumes, every component gets questioned.

This is why older Galaxy A-series phones, including the popular A52 and A53, skipped eSIM. Buyers in those markets rarely asked for it.

4. Carriers want control

In the US, carriers sell phones on contract. Some older carrier-sold Samsung models shipped with eSIM switched off in firmware. Early Pixels were similar. Google’s help page notes that Pixel 3 phones from most US and Canadian carriers don’t work with eSIM.

Where the no-eSIM variants actually come from

Here’s the pattern across the big brands. Use it as a starting point, then confirm your exact model number.

Brand

Variants most likely to lack eSIM

Model number clue

Apple iPhone

Mainland China models up to the iPhone 17 series; Hong Kong and Macao models of most iPhones up to the iPhone 16

Check the A-number in Settings

Samsung Galaxy

China, Hong Kong and Taiwan units; US carrier S20 and some S21 units; older A-series

Model ending in “0” (e.g. SM-S9110) or CSC codes CHC / TGY / BRI

Xiaomi

Any China ROM phone; most Redmi and POCO models

Model number ending in “C”

Google Pixel

Pixel 3 from Australia, Japan and Taiwan; Pixel 3a from Japan

Pixel 4 and newer all support eSIM

The Hong Kong iPhone detail most guides miss

Hong Kong is not a simple “no”. Apple’s list shows the Hong Kong iPhone 16 family on dual nano-SIM. But the Hong Kong iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air do support eSIM.

So even within one city, the answer changes from one generation to the next. A second-hand Hong Kong iPhone 15 and a new Hong Kong iPhone 17 behave very differently.

Mainland China is shifting too

Mainland China iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max models still take nano-SIM cards only. The iPhone Air broke that pattern. Apple’s support page now says the mainland iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17e can activate with either eSIM or nano-SIM.

There’s a catch. A mainland iPhone can’t install an eSIM from a non-Chinese carrier while it’s inside mainland China. Install your travel eSIM before you enter. If you’re heading there, our China mainland eSIM plans are built for that setup.

Xiaomi: the ROM myth

Plenty of forum threads suggest flashing a Global ROM onto a China-version Xiaomi to “unlock” eSIM. On many recent China units, the eUICC simply isn’t on the board. Software can’t create hardware.

Flashing firmware also carries real risks. We covered what happens to eSIM on modified software in eSIM on a rooted or jailbroken phone.

The reverse trap: phones with only eSIM

Regional variants cut both ways. Some markets now get phones with no SIM tray at all.

The iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max are eSIM-only in the US, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Guam and several Gulf states. The iPhone Air is eSIM-only everywhere. Apple used the freed space for a larger battery.

For travellers, that’s mostly good news. You can’t lose a tiny plastic card at a border kiosk. But it means you can’t fall back on a local physical SIM either.

There’s also a China-specific wrinkle. iPhone Air units bought outside mainland China can’t install a mainland carrier’s eSIM profile. A travel eSIM that roams onto Chinese networks is the practical option.

The 60-second check before you buy or fly

Do this before you pay for any plan. It works whether the phone is new, second-hand or borrowed.

**Dial *#06#.** An eSIM-capable phone usually shows an EID, a long 32-digit number. Read this first

Cheap phones in Hong Kong, Shenzhen or online marketplaces are tempting. Before you buy, ask the seller for the full model number, not just the name. Then match it against the manufacturer’s regional list.

Ask one more question: which market was it made for? A phone sold in Hong Kong isn’t always a Hong Kong variant. Resellers mix stock from everywhere.

eSIM is growing fast. GSMA Intelligence put global eSIM smartphone penetration at 5% at the end of 2025 and expects eSIM connections to outnumber physical SIMs by 2030. Our breakdown of eSIM adoption by country shows how uneven that growth is. Regional variants are a big reason why.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t my phone show an “Add eSIM” option?

Your phone is likely a regional variant without eSIM hardware, or its firmware has eSIM switched off. China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and some US carrier models are the usual cases. A carrier lock can also hide or block the option.

Do Hong Kong iPhones support eSIM?

It depends on the generation.
