Postpaid phones stay locked until the device is paid off. Pay the balance online and you wait another 35 days. Prepaid phones stay locked for 365 days of paid service.

A carrier-locked phone won’t accept another provider’s eSIM. If you’re 14 months into a 36-month payment plan, TravelPass may be your only real option this trip.

iPhone: Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. When one option charges daily and the other charges once, I find the break-even point.

Break-even day = eSIM price ÷ $12

A $15 eSIM breaks even on day two. That’s why Verizon pitches the Monthly Plan at trips of nine days or longer.

Trip

TravelPass, 1 line

TravelPass, family of 4

Monthly Plan, 1 line

Data-only eSIM, 1 line

3 days in Japan

$36

$144

$100

5GB for $5

7 days in Italy

$84

$336

$100

10GB for $8

14 days, multi-country Europe

$168

$672

$100

20GB for $19

30 days in Southeast Asia

$360

$1,440

$100

20GB for $68

Assumes one TravelPass session per day. A 24-hour session starts the first time your phone touches a foreign network. Verizon confirms that background activity counts, including email sync, weather refreshes and app updates.

Late arrivals cost a full day. Land at 11 pm, let email sync, and you’ve started a $12 session you’ll mostly sleep through.

Your last morning can cost one more. If your session ended at 9 am and you book a ride at 10, that’s a new $12 session.

Country-hopping is mixed. A layover in a second country inside the same session isn’t charged again. Moving from a $6 country to a $12 country starts a new session.

Bills arrive late. Verizon says international charges can take up to 60 days to appear.

Don’t Remove TravelPass When You Switch to an eSIM

This one surprises people. Many travelers delete TravelPass before a trip to make sure they’re never charged. That can backfire badly.

Without TravelPass, any stray usage on your Verizon line bills at pay-as-you-go rates. That’s $2.05 per MB of data, $1.79 to $2.99 per minute for calls and $0.50 per text sent. A 50MB background sync would cost $102.50. With TravelPass left on, the same slip costs $12.

So treat TravelPass as cheap insurance. Leave it on your line, then set your phone up so it rarely gets triggered.

How to Keep Your Verizon Number and Avoid $12 Days

The goal is simple. Your Verizon line handles calls, texts and verification codes. The travel eSIM handles data.

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Most activate in minutes. TravelPass costs $12 a day per line in most countries. A data-only travel eSIM is a one-off price, so divide it by $12 to find your break-even day.

Can I keep my Verizon number while using a travel eSIM?

Yes. A dual-SIM phone runs your Verizon line and a travel eSIM together. The eSIM carries data, while your Verizon number still receives calls and texts. Turn off data roaming on the Verizon line to avoid TravelPass charges.

Does Verizon TravelPass charge for background data?

Yes. Verizon says a session can start from background activity such as email sync, app refreshes and software updates. Turning off data roaming on your Verizon line is the main protection.

How much high-speed data does Verizon TravelPass include in 2026?

TravelPass includes 5GB of high-speed data per 24-hour session. After that, data continues at 3G speeds. You can add 2GB more for $10, or $5 in Canada and Mexico.

Is the Verizon International Monthly Plan worth it?

It beats TravelPass from about day nine. For $100 a month you get 20GB of high-speed data, 250 minutes and unlimited texts. Compare it with a 20GB eSIM before you commit.

Will a travel eSIM work on my Verizon phone?

Only if the phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. Since January 2026, Verizon keeps postpaid phones locked until they’re paid off. Prepaid phones stay locked for 365 days.

Should I remove TravelPass before I travel with an eSIM?

Usually not. Keeping TravelPass on caps a mistake at $12 for the day.

Blog Author

Peter

I'm Peter, the founder of BazTel.
