The 2026 Answer Depends on Who You Are

Quick answer: Yes, but only in one direction. Since 30 September 2026, riders with a US or Canadian Lyft account can open the same app in parts of Europe and book a ride.

Outside Europe and North America, Lyft still doesn’t operate. And if you live outside the US, Canada or Puerto Rico, signing up is the hard part, not the travel.

Most articles answer this question with a country list. That misses the real issue. Whether Lyft works for you overseas comes down to two things: where your account was created, and which phone number it’s tied to.

So let’s start there.

        Table of Contents

Your Lyft-abroad answer, by traveller type

You are…

Going to…

Can you use Lyft?

What to do

US or Canadian Lyft rider

UK, Ireland, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece (live cities)

Yes

Open your normal app on arrival

US or Canadian Lyft rider

France, Poland, Austria, Scotland

Rolling out

Check the app before you rely on it

US or Canadian Lyft rider

Asia, Australia, Latin America, Middle East, Africa

No

Use a local app (see table below)

Visitor from Australia, UK, Asia etc.

United States or Canada

Maybe

Expect a phone number hurdle

European Freenow user

Their home country

Yes, via Freenow

Keep using Freenow by Lyft

Each row has a catch. Here’s what they are.

What actually changed on 30 September 2026

For 14 years, Lyft only worked in the US and Canada. That changed in stages.

In 2025, Lyft bought the German taxi app Freenow from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Freenow runs in nine European countries. Lyft later added Gett’s UK business too.

Then, on 30 September 2026, Lyft switched on its main app in Europe. Barcelona and Hamburg went first. London, Rome, Paris, Berlin, Athens and Warsaw were promised during October.

The headline promise is simple. Same app, same account, same saved cards. No new download.

Announced vs actually live: check before you fly

Here’s where many travel blogs get it wrong. They copy the press release list and treat it as live.

On 17 October 2026, Lyft’s own Europe cities page listed these locations:

Country

Live on Lyft’s page (17 Oct 2026)

Announced, not yet listed

United Kingdom

London

Scotland

Ireland

Dublin

—

Spain

Barcelona, Madrid

—

Germany

Berlin, Hamburg, Dahme-Spreewald (BER airport area)

—

Italy

Rome

—

Greece

Athens

—

France

—

Paris

Poland

—

Warsaw

Austria

—

Vienna and others

Lyft says all ten countries should be covered by the end of October. Plans slip, though. Open the app before you book a tight airport transfer around it.

Notice what’s missing, too. Manchester, Milan, Munich and Lisbon aren’t on the list. Freenow covers many smaller cities, but the Lyft app doesn’t reach all of them yet.

Your “Lyft” in Europe will often be a taxi

This surprises people. Lyft didn’t hire a new army of drivers in Europe.

Instead, the Lyft app plugs into existing local marketplaces, mainly Freenow and Gett. Your request goes to their drivers. Freenow built its business around licensed taxis, so a black cab in London or a cream Mercedes taxi in Hamburg is a normal result.

That has upsides. Licensed taxis can often use bus lanes and taxi ranks. Many airports also give them better pickup spots than ride-share cars.

It also means the experience won’t feel identical to home. Ride types, wait times and fares follow local rules. Don’t expect your usual Lyft XL option in every city.

What a Lyft ride in Europe will cost you

Fares follow local pricing, and you’re charged in the local currency for now. Lyft says a choice to pay in your home currency is coming within a year.

Three money points worth checking:

Foreign transaction fees. A card that adds around 3% on euro or pound charges makes every ride dearer. Put a no-FX-fee card on your Lyft account before you leave.

Card perks may not follow you. Lyft credits from US credit cards and airline earn deals may exclude European rides. Upgraded Points notes Lyft hasn’t confirmed which benefits carry over.

Pending charges look odd. Ride apps often place a hold first, then settle the final fare days later. The amount can shift slightly with exchange rates.

One more rule: Lyft doesn’t support trips across international borders. Don’t plan a Lyft from Dublin to Belfast or Geneva into France.

Visiting the US from Australia, the UK or Asia? Here’s the real hurdle

This is the question Google surfaces constantly, and most guides skip it. Can a foreign tourist use Lyft in America?

Usually, yes, but sign-up is the problem. Lyft verifies accounts by SMS. Lyft’s own help documentation (published via its Divvy bike-share service) says the number must be from the US, Canada or Puerto Rico.

Lyft relaxed this for select international numbers during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. That window closed on 19 July 2026.

So what are your options?

Try your home number first. Some international numbers do work. It’s quick to test from home before you fly.

Get a US number. A US SIM or eSIM that includes a phone number can receive the code. Note that most travel eSIMs are data-only and have no number.

Use Uber instead. Uber accepts international numbers and works in both countries. For many visitors, this is the simplest fix.

Avoid random free text-receiving websites for verification codes. Anyone can read those numbers, and it’s a poor way to protect a payment-linked account.

Where Lyft doesn’t work, and what to use instead

Outside North America and the European rollout, Lyft has no service. Here’s what locals actually use.

Region

Main ride-hailing apps

Most of Europe

Uber, Bolt, Freenow

Southeast Asia

Grab, plus Gojek in Indonesia

Australia and New Zealand

Uber, DiDi

Latin America

Uber, DiDi, Cabify (varies by country)

Middle East

Careem, Uber

Japan and South Korea

GO (Japan), Kakao T (Korea), Uber in some cities

China

DiDi

Download and verify any new app at home. SMS codes arrive fastest on your home network, before you’re standing at arrivals.

The part nobody plans for: data at the kerb

Ride apps are useless without mobile data. You need it to request, track the car and message the driver.

The ride itself uses very little data. The problem is timing. You need a connection the minute you land, often before airport Wi-Fi has loaded.

Here’s the setup I recommend to frequent travellers:

Keep your home SIM switched on for texts. Lyft and your bank may still send one-time codes to that number.

Turn off data roaming on your home line. This stops a surprise bill from your carrier.

Use a travel eSIM for data. Install it before departure so it connects on landing. Any data-only eSIM that covers your destination will do the job.

Pre-trip Lyft checklist

Update the Lyft app to the latest version.

Check your destination city on Lyft’s Europe cities page.

Add a card with no foreign transaction fees.

Confirm your home SIM can receive texts abroad.

Install a data eSIM before you fly.

Download one local backup app, such as Uber or Bolt.

Save your hotel address in the local language.

Myths vs facts

Myth

Fact

Lyft now works worldwide.

It works in North America and a set of European cities only.

Anyone can use Lyft in Europe.

The rollout is built for US and Canadian accounts. Scotland is announced but wasn’t listed as live on 17 October 2026.

Does Lyft work in Mexico or the Caribbean?

Lyft operates in Puerto Rico. It doesn’t run in Mexico or most of the Caribbean, so use Uber or DiDi there.

Can Europeans use the Lyft app?

For now, Lyft wants European residents to keep using Freenow by Lyft or Gett by Lyft. A Lyft spokesperson said a single global app is planned for next year.

Is Lyft cheaper than Uber in Europe?

There’s no blanket answer. Both follow local pricing and taxi rules. Compare both apps for each trip, especially at airports.

Can I use Lyft without a US phone number?

Some international numbers work, but Lyft’s documented rule requires a US, Canadian or Puerto Rican number. Test sign-up at home before your trip.

How much data does Lyft use?

Very little per ride. A small data plan covers a week of rides. Getting connected fast on arrival matters more than plan size.

The bottom line

If you hold a US or Canadian Lyft account and you’re heading to a live European city, just open the app. Everyone else should plan a backup.

Either way, sort out data and SMS before take-off. A ride app can’t help you if your phone can’t get online at the airport.
