When you tether, the network sees a second device, often uses a separate hotspot APN, and may apply different plan rules. Your laptop also behaves differently: it runs VPNs, syncs huge files and expects bigger data packets. So “phone works, laptop doesn’t” usually means one of five layers has failed. Find the layer, and the fix takes minutes.

        Table of Contents

The laptop is a different customer

Here’s the part most travel eSIM hotspot guides skip. Your carrier doesn’t see “you”. It sees traffic.

When your phone loads a page, the request leaves the phone and goes straight onto the mobile network. When your laptop loads the same page over a hotspot, the phone has to act as a small router. That extra hop leaves fingerprints. Packets arrive with a lower TTL (time-to-live) value. The traffic pattern looks like a desktop, not a phone. On many networks, tethered data also travels through its own access point name (APN).

Each of those differences gives the network a reason to treat your laptop differently. Some of the reasons are deliberate (plan rules). Others are accidental (a missing setting). Telling them apart is the whole game.

I learned this the slow way on work trips. My phone would stream maps without complaint, while my laptop sat on “connected, no internet” in a hotel lobby. Restarting both devices felt productive. It rarely was.

Find your failing layer in 30 seconds

When an eSIM hotspot is not working on your laptop, match what you see to the row below. Newer iPhones broadcast their hotspot on 5GHz by default. Plenty of older laptops, and some work machines, only scan 2.4GHz well.

Apple’s own support guide says enabling Maximize Compatibility switches the hotspot to 2.4GHz for older devices, at some cost to speed and security (Apple Support). You’ll find it under Settings > Personal Hotspot.

Other quick checks:

Rename the hotspot to something plain, with no emojis or apostrophes.

On the laptop, “forget” the network and join again.

Try a USB cable instead. USB tethering skips Wi-Fi entirely and charges your phone while you work.

Layer 2: Permission (the hotspot APN is missing)

This is the classic eSIM tethering failure. Your phone’s data works because the main APN is set. The hotspot, though, often needs its own APN entry, and travel eSIMs don’t always push one.

On an iPhone, iOS loads a carrier settings bundle when you install an eSIM. If that bundle doesn’t authorise tethering, the Personal Hotspot option can vanish or grey out. Apple says to confirm that the carrier has enabled hotspot and that your plan supports it.

iPhone fix:

Turn Wi-Fi off and confirm the phone can browse on the eSIM.

Go to Settings > Mobile Service (or Cellular) > your eSIM line > Mobile Data Network.

Scroll to the Personal Hotspot section.

Copy the APN from the Mobile Data section into the Personal Hotspot APN field.

Restart the phone, then check Settings > General > About for a carrier settings update.

If you can’t see “Mobile Data Network” at all, the provider has locked the APN. That’s a message to send to support, not a setting to hunt for.

Android fix:

Android has a hidden twist. Some networks require a “DUN” (dial-up networking) APN type for tethering. If the phone’s APN only lists “default”, the hotspot turns on but passes no internet.

Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your eSIM > Access Point Names. On Samsung, it’s Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names.

Open the active APN.

In “APN type”, keep the existing values and add ,dun to the end.

Save, then toggle mobile data off and on.

Only use APN values your eSIM provider gives you. A wrong APN can break the phone’s own data too.

Layer 3: Plan policy (the network says no)

Sometimes nothing is broken. The plan simply doesn’t include tethering, or caps it.

Networks can spot tethered traffic in several ways. The best-known is the TTL value. Phones and laptops both stamp outgoing packets with a starting TTL, often 64. When your laptop’s traffic passes through your phone, it drops by one, to 63. That single number tells the network a second device is attached. Carriers can also read traffic patterns and device signatures, as network-equipment vendors openly describe (VAS Experts).

You’ll find forum guides on faking these signals. Skip them. They breach most plan terms, and on a travel eSIM you risk losing your data mid-trip with no local fallback.

The honest fix is boring. Before you buy, check the plan page or ask support one question: “Does this plan allow hotspot, and is tethered data capped separately?” (For BazTel, hotspot is allowed on every plan. Tethered data simply counts toward your normal allowance, with no separate cap.)

Layer 4: The tunnel (browsing works, the VPN doesn’t)

This layer causes the most confusing tickets. Web pages open fine on the laptop. Then the company VPN hangs, Teams drops, or Outlook spins forever.

The cause is usually packet size. Here’s why travel eSIMs hit it more often.

Most travel eSIMs use home-routed roaming. Your data doesn’t leave the internet in the country you’re standing in. It’s wrapped in a tunnel and carried back to the issuing operator, sometimes in another country entirely (ipregistry). Academic testing of a major eSIM reseller found home routing and hub breakouts were common, with true local breakout largely absent (arXiv, 2024).

Each tunnel adds a few bytes to every packet. Your corporate VPN then adds its own wrapper. A laptop still sending full-size 1,500-byte packets can exceed what the path allows. Small requests squeeze through. Large ones silently vanish. Phone apps tend to cope better because mobile operating systems size packets for mobile networks.

Laptop fix:

Windows: open Command Prompt as administrator and run netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface “Wi-Fi” mtu=1360 store=persistent. Use the adapter name your PC shows.

Mac: go to System Settings > Network > Wi-Fi > Details > Hardware. Set MTU to Custom and try 1360.

If your VPN app has its own MTU setting, lower that instead. Many IT teams find values between 1280 and 1400 work over mobile links.

Try switching your VPN protocol to one that runs over TCP port 443.

Set the MTU back to automatic when you’re home. Leaving it low won’t break anything, but it can trim a little speed.

A side effect of home routing: your laptop may look like it’s in Hong Kong while you’re in Tokyo. Banking and streaming sites sometimes block that. It’s a location issue, not a tethering one, so don’t chase it with APN changes.

Layer 5: Appetite (it worked, then it didn’t)

A phone sips data. A laptop gulps it. The moment it joins your hotspot, it may start cloud backups, photo sync and operating system updates. A single update can run to several gigabytes.

That matters even on “unlimited” travel plans. Most have a fair-use limit. BazTel’s unlimited plans, for example, give 2GB per day at full speed, then slow to 512kbps. Hotspot data counts toward the same daily limit, so one silent laptop update can burn a day’s full-speed allowance before lunch.

Tell the laptop it’s on a costly connection before you tether:

Windows: Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > your hotspot > turn on Metered connection.

Mac: System Settings > Wi-Fi > Details on the hotspot > turn on Low Data Mode.

Pause OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox and iCloud sync until you’re on hotel Wi-Fi.

Myths vs facts

Myth

Fact

“If my phone has data, tethering must work.”

Tethering can use a separate APN and separate plan rules.

“eSIMs can’t do hotspot.”

eSIMs tether exactly like physical SIMs when the plan allows it.

“Resetting network settings always fixes it.”

It helps with corrupted APNs. The usual cause is a missing hotspot APN, or a missing “dun” APN type on Android. If the APN is correct, the plan may not include tethering.

Can I use an eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes. An eSIM tethers just like a physical SIM. Whether it works depends on your plan, your provider’s settings and your phone. All BazTel eSIMs allow hotspot use, and tethered data comes out of the same plan allowance as your phone’s.

Why is Personal Hotspot greyed out after installing an eSIM?

The carrier settings bundle for that eSIM doesn’t authorise tethering, or the hotspot APN is blank. Enter the APN under Mobile Data Network, restart, and check for a carrier settings update.

Why does my VPN fail on my phone’s hotspot but work on hotel Wi-Fi?

Travel eSIM data usually runs through a roaming tunnel. Add a VPN tunnel on top and packets can grow too large. Lower your laptop’s MTU to around 1360 and reconnect.

Is USB tethering better than a Wi-Fi hotspot?

Often, yes. USB is more stable, avoids Wi-Fi band problems and charges your phone. Wi-Fi is better when you need to connect several devices.

Does tethering use more data than browsing on my phone?

Yes, mostly because laptops load desktop sites and run background updates. Turn on metered connection or Low Data Mode to keep it in check.

About the author

Peter Basil

Founder, CIPM, MBA

I'm Peter, the founder of BazTel.
