That’s the dry season in the Andes, Cusco and the southern Amazon. For Machu Picchu with clear skies and fewer people, aim for May or late September. For Lima and the beaches, go December to April. One 2027 twist: a strong coastal El Niño is forecast to bring extra rain risk to Peru’s north coast until about April 2027.

Key takeaways

Best overall month: May. That’s where they go wrong.

Peru packs three climates into one country. There’s the desert coast, the high Andes and the Amazon basin. Their seasons don’t line up. When Cusco is bone-dry in July, Lima sits under a grey blanket of sea mist. When Lima’s beaches are at their best in February, the Andes are at their wettest.

So I plan Peru with three calendars open at once:

The weather calendar – which region is dry, warm or green.

The permit calendar – when Machu Picchu tickets and Inca Trail permits sell out.

The events calendar – festivals, public holidays and, this year, El Niño.

The best time to visit Peru is wherever those three overlap for your trip. It matters right now.

Peru’s official El Niño monitoring body, ENFEN, has kept a Coastal El Niño alert active through 2026. Its September 2026 communiqué said the event would likely last until mid-autumn 2027. It flagged September 2026 to January 2027 as the window with the highest chance of extraordinary strength. It also expected river flows in the north to rise from November.

What does that mean for a traveller?

North coast (Piura, Tumbes, Trujillo, Chiclayo): expect a higher risk of heavy rain, flash floods and mudslides (huaicos) from December 2026 to about April 2027. Previous coastal El Niño events in 2017 and 2023 caused serious flooding in this region.

Lima and the central coast: warmer air and sea temperatures than usual. Tickets are sold only through the Ministry of Culture’s official site, tuboleto.cultura.pe.

Daily capacity is the hidden crowd forecast. Peru’s Ministry of Culture set a high-season cap of 5,600 visitors a day for 2026. That applied on 1 January, 2–5 April, 19 June to 2 November and 30–31 December. Other days were capped at 4,500. The government raises the cap when it expects the most demand, so those dates are your crowd map. The Andes are dry and still green, the southern Amazon is drying out, and peak-season crowds haven’t arrived. September is a close second.

When is the rainy season in Peru? In the Andes it runs roughly November to March, peaking in January and February. The Amazon is wetter from December to May. The coast barely gets rain, except in El Niño years on the north coast.

When is Machu Picchu least crowded? Outside the high-season dates, when the daily cap drops from 5,600 to 4,500. In practice, that means May, early June and late November to mid-December. Early morning slots also help.

What is the cheapest time to visit Peru? November to April, excluding Christmas, New Year and Holy Week. Flights and Cusco hotels are cheaper then. Pack proper rain gear.

Will El Niño affect a trip to Peru in 2027? It might if you visit the north coast between December 2026 and April 2027. ENFEN expects the coastal event to last until mid-autumn 2027. Cusco and Machu Picchu trips are less exposed, but keep a buffer day.

How far in advance should I book Machu Picchu? Book four to six weeks ahead for standard circuits in shoulder months. Allow three months or more for Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain in June to August. Inca Trail permits need six to eight months.

Is December a good time to visit Peru? Yes, for Lima, the beaches and an Amazon river cruise. It’s wet in Cusco, but crowds are low until Christmas. In 2026, watch El Niño updates if you’re heading north.

Note: This guide draws on official sources wherever possible.
