You can top up without reinstalling. On an unlimited plan, it doesn’t stop. It slows down until your daily allowance resets.

Running out isn’t a disaster. The expensive part is what people do next, which is usually switching back to their home SIM. More on that below.

        Table of Contents

What happens when travel eSIM data runs out?

It depends on your plan type:

Plan type

When the data is used up

What you can do

Fixed data (e.g. 10GB)

Data stops. Your phone may still show signal bars, but nothing loads.

Top up, or buy a new plan

Unlimited

Speed drops (512kbps on BazTel) until the daily allowance resets

Wait for the reset, or switch heavy tasks to Wi-Fi

Any plan, when time runs out

The plan ends, even if data is left

Buy a new plan or extend

That signal-bars detail confuses a lot of people. The eSIM is still registered on the network, so you see bars. There’s just no data allowance behind it.

At 512kbps, unlimited plans still handle maps, messaging and voice calls. Here’s what 512kbps can actually run.

Data or days: whichever runs out first

Every travel eSIM has two limits: a data amount and a validity period. Your plan ends when either one reaches zero.

So a 10GB plan valid for 7 days ends on day 7, even with 4GB unused. And it ends on day 3 if you use all 10GB by then.

On BazTel, the validity clock starts when the eSIM first connects in your destination, not when you install it.

The costly mistake: switching back to your home SIM

When the eSIM stops, the quick fix is to switch mobile data back to your home line. If data roaming is on for that line, you’re now roaming at your carrier’s rates.

On a day pass, that’s US$12 a day on Verizon or AT&T, or AU$10 a day on Telstra. Without a pass, US carriers charge about US$2 per megabyte. A 10-minute video could cost hundreds.

Some Android phones can also move data to your other SIM automatically when one line stops working. Look for a setting called something like “automatic data switching” and turn it off while you travel.

Rule of thumb: keep data roaming off on your home SIM for the whole trip. Top up the eSIM instead. It’s almost always cheaper.

Here’s how to prevent home carrier roaming charges, and why your phone can still roam with a travel eSIM installed.

How to top up a travel eSIM

On most providers, a top-up adds data to the eSIM you already have. You don’t need to install anything new.

On BazTel, it takes about a minute:

Connect to Wi-Fi, since your eSIM data has run out.

Log in to your BazTel dashboard and tap eSIMs.

Open the eSIM and choose a top-up.

Pay. The data is added straight away, with no reinstall.

Need Wi-Fi in a hurry? Hotels, cafés, train stations and most airports have it. Avoid entering card details on open networks if you can; a password-protected network is safer.

Better still, top up before you hit zero. Then you never need to hunt for Wi-Fi.

Top up, new plan or unlimited?

If you’re running out early, pick the option that matches the rest of your trip:

Situation

Best option

A few days left, light use

A small top-up (1–3GB)

Many days left, steady use

A bigger top-up, or a new fixed plan

Many days left, heavy daily use

Consider unlimited. On an unlimited plan, speed drops until the daily allowance resets. On BazTel, that’s 512kbps after 2GB a day.

Can I top up a travel eSIM?

Yes, on most providers. The data is added to your existing eSIM, with no reinstall. On BazTel, you top up from the eSIM’s page in your dashboard.

Will my phone switch to my home SIM when eSIM data runs out?

Not on its own, usually. But if you switch data back yourself with roaming on, your carrier will charge roaming rates. Some Android phones have automatic data switching, which you should turn off.

What happens when my eSIM plan expires?

Data stops, even if some is left. The eSIM profile usually stays on your phone. On BazTel, you can’t top up an expired plan, so you’ll need a new one.

Do I lose unused data when the plan ends?

Yes, on BazTel and most providers. Unused data expires with the plan. That’s why it pays to size your plan to your trip.

Why do I have signal bars but no internet?

The eSIM is still registered on the network, but there’s no data left on the plan.
