Postpaid roaming charges you by the day. Prepaid roaming charges you by the gigabyte, or by a fixed pass bought upfront. So the cheaper option depends on three numbers: days abroad, lines on the account and data used per day.

For most travelers on Verizon, AT&T or a Canadian carrier, a prepaid travel eSIM costs 75% to 85% less on a one to two week trip. Postpaid can win for UK travelers inside the EU, some Australian plans with A$5 day rates, and very heavy data users.

        Table of Contents

You don’t pay for roaming. You pay for a pricing model.

Most articles on prepaid vs postpaid roaming compare contracts and credit checks. That misses the point for travelers. The real difference is the unit you’re billed in.

Postpaid roaming is billed by your home carrier after the trip. It comes in three forms:

Day passes, such as Verizon TravelPass or the AT&T International Day Pass. You pay a flat daily fee on any day your phone uses the foreign network.

Included roaming, where some data abroad is bundled into your monthly plan.

Pay-per-use, where there’s no pass at all. This is where bill shock lives.

Prepaid international roaming is paid before you use it. You’ll find three versions:

A prepaid carrier pack, such as a Telstra Pre-Paid travel pack.

A local SIM card bought on arrival.

A travel eSIM, bought online and installed before you leave.

A postpaid day pass costs the same whether you send one text or stream for hours. A prepaid plan costs the same whether you use it on day one or spread it across two weeks. Once you see that, the comparison becomes simple math.

Postpaid roaming

Prepaid roaming

Billing unit

Per day, per line

Per GB or per plan

When you pay

After the trip

Before you use it

Keeps your number

Yes

Yes, if you keep your home SIM active

Risk of bill shock

Higher

Close to zero

Best for

Short, heavy-use trips on generous plans

Longer trips, families, light-to-moderate use

2026 roaming prices at a glance

Here’s what the big carriers charge right now. The first thing I do with any price is turn it into a unit cost. Roaming is no different.

Here’s the formula:

Break-even GB per day = day pass price ÷ prepaid price per GB

If you use more data than that each day, the day pass is better value. Our guide on how much data you need for travel breaks it down by activity.

So at US$12 a day, you’d need to burn through 3GB to 6GB daily before TravelPass made sense. Very few tourists do.

Five billing traps that inflate postpaid roaming charges

The sticker price is rarely what you pay. These are the traps I see most often in support tickets and traveler forums.

1. No pass at all

Without a pass, Verizon’s pay-as-you-go data costs US$2.05 per MB. One gigabyte would cost about US$2,100. A single unnoticed app update could hurt.

2. The touch day

Day passes start the moment your phone touches the network. A background sync counts. So does one text. Verizon confirms that background data can start a 24-hour TravelPass session. A three-hour layover in a TravelPass country can cost you a full day.

3. The per-line multiplier

Every line pays its own daily fee. A family of four on TravelPass pays US$48 a day. Over ten days, that’s US$480 before tax.

4. The billing-cycle split

AT&T caps charges at 10 days per line per bill period. That’s helpful on a long trip. But if a 14-day trip straddles two billing cycles, you could pay for all 14 days. That’s US$168 per line instead of US$120.

5. Clocks and speed cliffs

Telstra’s Day Pass resets at midnight Sydney time, not local time. In Europe, your “day” can roll over in the middle of the afternoon. Speed cliffs matter too. Verizon drops you to 3G speeds after 5GB, and T-Mobile drops included data to 256kbps.

Three trips, costed out

These examples assume about 1GB of data per person per day. That’s a realistic figure for maps, messaging and social media.

Trip 1: US couple, 14 days in Italy

Option

Total cost

Verizon TravelPass (2 lines × 14 days × US$12)

US$336

AT&T Day Pass, one billing cycle (10-day cap)

US$240

AT&T Day Pass, split across two cycles

US$336

T-Mobile Experience More plus a 30-day pass for each line

US$100

BazTel Europe eSIM, unlimited, US$2/day each

US$56

The prepaid eSIM saves US$184 to US$280 against Verizon and AT&T. Prepaid roaming is priced by usage. For most travelers, usage is low and trips are long, so prepaid comes out ahead.

Run the formula once before your next trip. If your carrier charges US$12 a day and you use 1GB, you’re paying about US$12 per gigabyte. A prepaid travel eSIM from US$1 makes that hard to justify.

Prepaid vs postpaid roaming: FAQs

Is prepaid roaming cheaper than postpaid roaming?

Usually, yes. Postpaid day passes cost US$10 to US$18 per line per day in the US and Canada. Prepaid travel eSIMs often cost a few dollars a day. Postpaid can still win for UK travelers in the EU and some Australian A$5 plans.

Will I be charged an international day pass if I don’t use my phone?

Not if your phone stays off the network. Day passes start when you call, text or use data, including background data. Airplane mode with Wi-Fi on won’t trigger a charge.

Can I use a prepaid eSIM and keep my postpaid number?

Yes. Dual-SIM phones can run both lines at once. Wi-Fi calling is usually charged as a domestic call, but check your carrier.

Can I get international roaming on a prepaid plan?

Some prepaid carriers sell roaming packs.
