Australians pay roughly 3 to 7 times more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a pass, international roaming gets far worse. US carriers charge about $2.05 per megabyte on pay-as-you-go. That&#8217;s over $2,000 per gigabyte. One forgotten app update could cost more than your hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-a-travel-esim-cheaper-than-roaming-a-7-day-trip-priced\">Is a travel eSIM cheaper than roaming? A 7-day trip, priced<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a one-week trip to Europe for one person, using about 1GB a day. Divide the eSIM price by the daily roaming fee. That&#8217;s the number of days before the eSIM becomes cheaper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The one-day rule:<\/strong> on a US$12 day pass, a US$10 eSIM is cheaper before your first day abroad is over. On Verizon, that&#8217;s four lines at $12 a day for 14 days: <strong>US$672<\/strong>. AT&amp;T charges $6 for each extra line, which still comes to as much as US$420.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A family that size typically uses 30\u201345GB in two weeks, based on our <a href=\"https:\/\/baztel.co\/blog\/family-data-usage-europe-2-weeks\">family data study<\/a>. Four 10GB eSIMs cost US$40. Even buying generously, you&#8217;re unlikely to pass US$60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-roaming-charges-that-catch-people-out\">The roaming charges that catch people out<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most bill shock doesn&#8217;t come from the daily fee. It comes from the rules around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The meter starts by itself.<\/strong> Day passes trigger on any day your phone uses the network. A background app refresh at the airport is enough.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Some plans aren&#8217;t eligible.<\/strong> Telstra excludes several plan types from its Day Pass. Those fall back to pay-as-you-go.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Some countries aren&#8217;t covered.<\/strong> Optus has no capped pass for Turkey, Mexico or India. Vodafone AU has none for the UAE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Daily billing uses home time.<\/strong> Telstra bills by the Australian calendar day, so a late-night flight can cost you an extra day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do switch to an eSIM, set your phone up properly. Otherwise your home line can still roam in the background. Check before you pay for anything.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You&#8217;re abroad for a few hours.<\/strong> For a single-day layover, a day pass can be simpler than setting anything up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You need to make lots of normal calls on your own number.<\/strong> Travel eSIMs are data-only. Calls over WhatsApp or FaceTime work, but regular calls go through your home carrier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If none of those apply, roaming is a convenience you&#8217;re paying a lot for. That&#8217;s why you must switch data roaming on for the eSIM line. You just aren&#8217;t billed roaming rates, because you&#8217;ve prepaid the data.
