Japan builds robots that fold your laundry. Its trains run to the second. Yet drive two hours into the mountains of Nagano or Tohoku, and your phone can still lose signal entirely. That contrast is the real story behind the Docomo vs. SoftBank vs. KDDI debate, and it’s more interesting than “which carrier is best.”
I’ve tested all three networks on trips through Tokyo, the Japanese Alps, and rural Kyushu, running BazTel’s own eSIMs alongside local SIMs to compare real performance. This guide covers what actually causes the rural coverage gap, how each carrier stacks up, and what’s genuinely changing the picture right now: satellites.

Docomo generally wins outright rural coverage. KDDI is catching up fast, partly because of a technology none of its rivals have matched yet. SoftBank is genuinely excellent, just not built for the countryside.
Why Does Rural Coverage Even Differ in a Country This Advanced?
This is the part most comparison articles skip. It isn’t really about “better towers.” It’s about two things: history and physics.
History. NTT Docomo was spun out of Japan’s old state telephone monopoly in 1992. It inherited decades of infrastructure and government-backed rollout obligations that reached fishing villages and mountain towns long before SoftBank existed as a mobile carrier. SoftBank only entered mobile in 2006, buying Vodafone Japan’s network. KDDI sits in between, formed from a 2001 merger of DDI, KDD, and IDO.
Physics. Each carrier owns different radio spectrum, and low-frequency bands travel much farther than high-frequency ones. In Japan, these low bands are nicknamed the “platinum band.” Docomo holds strong 700MHz and 800MHz platinum-band spectrum, which is why its signal reaches deep into valleys and thick forest where higher frequencies simply can’t penetrate. KDDI’s 800MHz band 26 plays a similar role for au. SoftBank has platinum-band spectrum too, but a shorter history of using it for rural buildout means fewer rural towers overall.
So the gap isn’t laziness from SoftBank. It’s a 30-year head start for Docomo, amplified by radio-wave physics.
Docomo: The Rural Benchmark
Docomo remains Japan’s largest carrier, with roughly 84 million subscribers and around 290,000 base station sites nationwide. Independent testing from OpenSignal’s Mobile Network Experience Report consistently places Docomo at or near the top for coverage experience and 5G reach.
Where this matters most:
- Hokkaido’s countryside and coastal roads
- The Japanese Alps and Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail
- Remote islands like Yakushima
- Long Shinkansen tunnels, where Docomo tends to hold a stronger signal than SoftBank
Docomo’s honest weak spot isn’t rural at all. It’s the opposite: extremely dense urban events. Packed venues like Comiket in Tokyo have reported data slowdowns during peak crowd density, a side effect of Docomo’s older band 19 spectrum getting squeezed under 5G traffic.
KDDI (au): The Fast-Closing Second Place
KDDI serves roughly 63 million subscribers and is often the most balanced pick for travelers mixing cities, trains, and day trips into the countryside. It isn’t quite Docomo’s equal in deep rural pockets, but the margin has narrowed.
What’s really changed the calculation for KDDI is satellite connectivity. In April 2025, KDDI launched au Starlink Direct, Japan’s first direct-to-cell satellite service, built with SpaceX. Here’s the number that matters: KDDI’s terrestrial network already reaches over 99.9% of Japan’s population, but Japan’s mountainous terrain limits geographic coverage to only about 60%. Starlink Direct is designed to close that remaining 40%, letting a standard smartphone send texts, share location, and receive earthquake alerts with nothing more than a clear view of the sky, no extra hardware needed.
That’s a genuinely new kind of rural coverage. It doesn’t beat a terrestrial tower for speed, but it means a compatible au phone can text for help from places no carrier has ever reached with ground infrastructure. This is arguably the most important development in Japanese rural connectivity since the platinum band itself.
SoftBank: Built for Cities, Not Countryside
SoftBank serves about 51 million subscribers and consistently posts the fastest urban download speeds among the big three, often over 60 Mbps. It also frequently wins OpenSignal’s 5G availability category, meaning SoftBank users spend more time actively connected to 5G where it exists.
The tradeoff is geographic depth. SoftBank’s rural rollout started later and never matched Docomo’s low-band density. Independent testing shows SoftBank speeds dropping noticeably in Shinkansen tunnels between rural stations, sometimes to a third of what Docomo or KDDI hold in the same spots.
SoftBank isn’t a bad network. It’s the right network for a specific trip: Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and nothing much beyond. It’s not the one to trust in the Japanese Alps.
SoftBank is also chasing the satellite trend, having signed a 2024 collaboration with Intelsat aimed at blending terrestrial and satellite coverage into one seamless network. It’s earlier-stage than KDDI’s live Starlink service, but it signals where all three carriers are heading.
The Real 2026 Story: Satellites Are Rewriting “Rural Coverage”
For 30 years, rural coverage in Japan meant one thing: how many towers a carrier had built. That definition is now splitting into two questions:
- How good is the terrestrial (tower-based) network?
- Does the carrier have a satellite backup for the places towers can’t reach?
KDDI currently leads on question two with its live Starlink partnership. SoftBank is building toward the same goal with Intelsat. Rakuten Mobile, the newest of Japan’s four operators, has partnered with AST SpaceMobile and still leans on KDDI’s network for its own coverage gaps.
This matters for anyone planning a trip beyond the cities. A network’s tower coverage tells you about everyday browsing and video calls. A network’s satellite backup tells you whether you can send an SOS text from a hiking trail with zero bars. In 2026, that second question is becoming just as important as the first, especially given Japan’s earthquake and tsunami risk.
What This Means If You’re Traveling to Japan
Most travelers don’t buy a Docomo, KDDI, or SoftBank plan directly. They buy an eSIM, and the eSIM’s underlying network is what actually determines coverage. This is the detail that trips people up: two eSIMs can look identical on a comparison site and connect to completely different networks once you land.
