eSIM adoption growing this fast was always going to attract fraud. Through 2026, security researchers and carriers have flagged a rise in “eSIM swap” scams. The trick: convincing a carrier’s support staff to move your number onto a device they control. The mechanism isn’t new. It’s the same social engineering behind classic SIM swapping. What’s new is the target.
Here’s the nuance worth understanding. eSIMs are genuinely harder to clone or physically steal than a plastic card, since there’s no card to remove. But they don’t stop a scammer from convincing a support agent to reassign your number. They also don’t stop phishing for the activation code or QR profile itself. Several high-profile account takeovers reported in 2026 traced back to physical SIM swaps, not eSIM ones. That’s a point in eSIM’s favor. It’s not the same as being immune.

And it works through an ordinary phone’s eSIM slot, not separate satellite hardware.

Less visible to travelers, but arguably the biggest structural shift of 2026, is what’s happening in IoT. The GSMA’s SGP.32 standard for remote SIM provisioning, released in 2025, spent this year moving from spec to real deployment.
Research firm Juniper forecasts eSIM device connections growing 30% in 2026 alone. Logistics, oil and gas, and smart street lighting are leading the charge.
