Every cellular Apple Watch and most LTE Galaxy Watches have a built-in eSIM chip. That single fact leads a lot of travelers to a reasonable but wrong assumption. They think they can buy a travel eSIM, install it on their watch, and leave the phone at the hotel. They can’t. This explains why, what actually happens to your watch abroad, and what setup genuinely works.
The Short Answer: No Travel eSIM Installs Directly on a Smartwatch
Not on Apple Watch. Not on Galaxy Watch. Not on Pixel Watch. This holds across every ecosystem. It isn’t a policy choice by any single manufacturer.
Phone eSIMs use a GSMA standard called SGP.22. That’s the same consumer eSIM format every travel eSIM provider, BazTel included, is built around. Smartwatch cellular uses a completely different, carrier-controlled system. Apple calls it Number Share. Samsung and most Android carriers use a similar carrier-provisioned profile. It exists purely to mirror your phone’s existing number onto your wrist. It was never built to accept a second, independent provider’s eSIM profile.
The watch hardware could technically handle a standard travel eSIM. The software simply doesn’t expose that option. Your watch has a working eSIM chip, but the slot is locked to whatever carrier already runs your phone plan.
Why This Trips Up So Many Travelers
The confusion is understandable. On a phone, buying a travel eSIM is simple. Scan a QR code or tap an install button, and you’re online on a new network in minutes. People reasonably expect the same to work on a watch, since it also has an eSIM.
It doesn’t, because the watch was never designed as an independent line you can point at a different provider. It’s an extension of your phone number, provisioned entirely by the carrier already billing your phone. Buying a separate travel eSIM and expecting it to load onto your watch is a bit like installing a new operating system through your phone’s camera app. Different system, different purpose.
If You’re on Telstra, Your Apple Watch Won’t Work Overseas at All
This is worth knowing before you travel, not after. Telstra’s own product page states plainly that a cellular-enabled smartwatch on its network only works where there’s Telstra coverage in Australia. Once you’re overseas, it won’t connect to a mobile network at all, even if your paired phone can.
Optus offers Number Share for $5 a month on eligible postpaid plans. International roaming support isn’t clearly advertised either way. Worth a direct call to Optus before relying on it for a trip. Vodafone Australia’s watch-focused offering, marketed through BetterRoaming, is built around domestic use for family safety rather than international travel.
The practical takeaway for Australian travelers: don’t assume your local watch plan follows you overseas. Check with your specific carrier, in writing, before you leave.
What Actually Works Abroad, Carrier by Carrier
A handful of carriers, mostly in the US, do offer genuine international roaming for smartwatches.
AT&T’s NumberSync supports watch roaming in 35+ countries through an International Day Pass. It’s priced around $12 a day, shared with the paired iPhone’s plan. T-Mobile’s DIGITS includes free, slow 2G-speed international data on the watch in 215+ countries, with a faster paid pass around $5 a day. Verizon’s Number Share works abroad through TravelPass, at $10 to $14 a day.
In the UK, EE, Vodafone, and Three each include some level of watch roaming on specific plans, though coverage and cost vary. Apple’s own documentation confirms watchOS 9.1 and later supports international roaming on Series 5 and newer, SE and newer, and Ultra models. But only if your specific carrier has enabled it on your account. It isn’t automatic, and it isn’t universal.
The Setup That Actually Works Everywhere
Forget trying to give your watch its own international connection. There’s a simpler, cheaper, more reliable setup. Put a travel eSIM on your phone. Keep your watch paired to that phone over Bluetooth.
This works in every country, on every watch, regardless of what your home carrier supports for wearables. Your phone handles the actual data connection through the travel eSIM. Your watch receives notifications, messages, maps, and health data through the Bluetooth link, exactly as it does at home. There’s no extra cost beyond the phone’s eSIM plan, and no carrier-specific watch add-on to configure before you fly.
The only real limitation is range. Want to leave your phone in the hotel room and run with just your watch? You’re back to needing your home carrier’s international watch roaming. Otherwise, the watch runs offline until you’re back within Bluetooth range, or on WiFi.
Setting This Up Before You Travel
